WESTJET LOAD FACTOR FALLS IN JUNE

WestJet reported a small increase in the percentage of empty seats on its planes in June compared with a year ago, as the airline increased its capacity by 23.1 per cent.
PORTER REVISES EWR FLIGHTS
Porter Airlines is introducing improved flight times today between Toronto City Centre Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport after discussions with the FAA. A 6:30 p.m. TCCA departure will be added to the schedule along with a 9 p.m. Newark departure.  Porter currently operates six return flights every weekday on the TCCA-Newark route, plus weekend service.
BERTHA UPGRADED TO CATEGORY 3

Hurricane Bertha has strengthened to a Category 3 storm. The Atlantic season's first hurricane is still far from land, but the National Hurricane Center says it now has maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometres an hour.


WESTJET, SOUTHWEST TEAM UP

The airlines have signed a codeshare and distribution agreement
WestJet has signed a memorandum of understanding to build a distribution and codeshare agreement with U.S. based Southwest Airlines. This is the first step that will see both airlines, by late 2009, have the ability to commence codeshare flights across both networks. In the near future, southwest.com will become a distribution channel for WestJet's existing Canadian and transborder flights. Sean Durfy, President and CEO of WestJet commented, "This is a defining moment for WestJet." Continue reading for all details of the agreement. FRANK ADDISON: 22 YEARS LATER

TRAVELHotNews.com recently had a chance to catch up with Frank Addison, whose last name is attached to the travel trade shows that crisscross Canada. Addison Travel Marketing was founded in 1981 by Addison. The very first Addison Show took place 22 years ago, in the fall of 1986. Prior to his involvement in Addison Travel Marketing, Frank Addison began his career in the travel industry in 1967, when he purchased 3 travel agencies, building them up to a total of 17 and selling them in 1976. That time period was quite active for Addison. “In 1969 I started a tour company with a partner – it was Hagen’s Travel, and we built that up over time and sold [the business] in 1980.” Continue reading for more. SUN SETS ON SUNWING'S PANAMA
Panama program from YYZ, YUL cancelled; hotel fails to meet contractual conditions
Sunwing Vacations has announced that it will not be operating flights from Toronto and Montreal to Panama commencing this upcoming fall as originally scheduled and as previously announced. The reason provided by the tour operator for the discontinuation of the program is Playa Blanca Hotel's failure to meet standards and conditions as outlined in the contractual agreement between the property and Sunwing Vacations.   As a gesture of goodwill by Sunwing, customers have been contacted through their travel agents and have been offered a change of destination with a credit towards that vacation, or cancellation with full refund. 4 U.S. SALMONELLA CASES IN CANADA

Four Canadians, including two Alberta men who travelled to Texas on business, have tested positive for the strain of salmonella responsible for a large food poisoning outbreak in the United States. But the Public Health Agency of Canada, which issued the updated figure Monday, said it still appears that the contaminated foodstuff behind the outbreak isn't being distributed in this country.

The top two carriers at Denver International Airport have told state labour officials they are laying off a total of about 600 people. Frontier Airlines will lay off 456 workers come Sep. 1st and United will get rid of 50 customer service reps and 100 “ramp servicemen” this week. Orlando, Florida-based discount carrier AirTran Airways is also cutting 480 jobs (180 pilots, 300 flight attendants).
BORDER RUNNERS SEIZED

Two men wanted in an altercation with a U.S. Border Patrol agent on the Vermont-Quebec border are reportedly in custody in Canada. Originally the Border Patrol said two suspects were arrested and one fled when they were challenged by the agent on a street in Derby Line, Vt., at around 2:15 a.m. Monday. However, U.S. officials now say there were four people in the group, three men and a woman. The agent fired two shots at the suspects after being assaulted. There were no injuries.
