HOTEL WORKERS STRIKE
Canadian Press
Workers at two Toronto hotels are staging half-day work stoppages today and Wednesday to protest a lack of progress in contract talks. About 82 workers at the Holiday Inn Airport East and 58 at the Radisson Suites Airport are taking part in the job action. The workers have been in a legal strike-lockout position since July 10. Their union, Unite Here, is pressing for higher wages along with benefit, workload and job security upgrades from the Westmont Hospitality Group. The union says negotiations on behalf of about 850 workers at the downtown Fairmont Royal York hotel continue moving forward. The legal strike-lockout deadline for those workers was earlier extended to July 27.

SHUT DOWN
Competition Tribunal does not grant leave to CSTAR’s complaint against IATA for paper tickets
CSTAR has announced that the Competition Tribunal has decided not to grant leave to CSTAR's application to hear a complaint against IATA in the paper ticket matter in Canada.  The Tribunal stated that CSTAR was not directly impacted by IATA's move to remove paper tickets in Canada, but left open the possibility that the Tribunal would review the matter again if a travel agent so affected would bring such a complaint.  CSTAR sent out a press release stating they “did substantial due diligence” to ensure that the organization could apply in a representative capacity; approximately 200 travel agencies had asked CSTAR to represent them.
"You can't win every case, but you have to try wherever possible to counteract those injustices which often loom large in our industry," said CSTAR President Bruce Bishins. [Full text and pictures]

BORDERS OUT EAST
Moncton, Fredericton, Charlottetown airports will see more border services
Canadian Press
The federal government is extending the number of hours that border services are available at the Moncton, Fredericton and Charlottetown airports. Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day says it will cost about $1 million a year to extend the hours to 16 hours a day, from 8 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. Day says the extended hours, which take effect on Monday, will make the airports more competitive for international flights. The new hours are also aimed at helping tourism in the region. The announcement means that airport authorities and airlines will no longer have to pay for passenger clearances after 5 p.m.

AC'S YHZ FLIGHT STAFF RALLY
Canadian Press
Air Canada flight attendants in Halifax are fighting a move by the airline to shut down its only Atlantic base for in-flight workers, saying the closure will put passengers in the lurch. More than 100 flight attendants rallied on Monday at the Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport to save their jobs and keep the base open. The union representing the flight attendants says that if the workers aren't based in Halifax, planes will be dependent on staff flown in from other cities and cause more delays and cancellations.
