G.A.P ADVENTURES WINS BIG!
Flight Centre North America and its corporate division, FCm Travel Solutions, have awarded  G.A.P. Adventures the very first Sustainable Tourism award from the company. The award was established to recognize the industry supplier that has made the greatest effort to minimize their environmental impact. The award was presented to G.A.P.’s Sheralynn Berry at Flight Centre’s annual black-tie Ball held in Vancouver on July 5th.

Yesterday evening at the Novotel North York, the tourism industry welcomed Ronjon Lahiri, the brand new director of India Tourism in Canada. He will be based in Toronto. Lahiri has worked for India Tourism for 24 years, serving in various cities such as Goa, Delhi, Patna and Bihar; he also worked in New York City, so he knows the North American market.  Vibhava Tripathi, the tourist information officer for India Tourism, introduced Lahiri and his wife to the crowd of well-wishers, which included members of Air India, Jet Airways, Emirates, Tour East Holidays, Royal Scenic, Skylink and more.  [Full text and pictures]

The RMR Group Inc. has announced the appointment of Pam Fiamelli, effective immediately, to work on the VISIT FLORIDA account as Sales and Promotions Manager Canada. Fiamelli is also responsible for The UNIVERSITY of VISIT FLORIDA, the official Canadian travel education program for the state of Florida. Agents spend June 7-14 in the Riviera Maya and Cancun touring Sandos and RIU Caribe
It was double the FAM fun for a group of Trip Central agents who spent June 7th to 14th touring the Riviera Maya and Cancun.  Led by Donna Giffin, Business Development Representative Atlantic Canada, of Signature Vacations the group had the opportunity to see last winter’s customer favourites and this year’s new hotel offerings.  The trip was hosted by both the Sandos Caracol Beach & Spa in the Riviera Maya and the Riu Caribe in Cancun.

Sunquest Hurricane Policy in effect from Jun. 1-Nov. 30
From June 1 til Nov. 30, 2008, Sunquest has a Hurricane Policy in effect for regions of the Caribbean and Mexico. The Hurricane Policy will take effect if an official hurricane watch or warning (Category 1 or higher) is issued by the relevant local government or by the National Hurricane Center. If a hurricane is forecasted to affect a destination within the watch or warning area during a Sunquest customer’s scheduled holiday, or if a hurricane passes through the destination within one week prior to departure, Sunquest offers the following options: change departure dates, change destinations, continue travelling, and others. ICONIC N.S. HOTEL TO CLOSE DOWN

The Heather Hotel and Convention Centre in the historic coal-mining centre of Stellarton, N.S., is closing next Thursday after opening its doors in 1967. Owner George LaFleur of Ontario wouldn't give specific reasons for the closure, but says the move was necessary due to circumstances beyond his control.
MARRIOTT'S Q2 EARNINGS DOWN

Hotel operator Marriott International said Thursday that second-quarter earnings dropped 24%  as the deteriorating economy dragged down demand, a trend the company expects will extend into next year. While the latest adjusted earnings beat Wall Street expectations, Marriott cut its outlook for the year, and its shares fell more than seven per cent. Marriott earned US$157M, down from $207M the previous year.
