BA WILL LAUNCH NY-EUROPE CARRIER
Canadian Press
British Airways will launch a new airline named OpenSkies with flights from New York to Brussels and Paris. Service will begin in June with one Boeing 757 aircraft. A second aircraft will be added later this year. British Airways plans to increase that number to six aircraft by the end of 2009. The carrier's expansion is pending regulatory approval in the U.S. and U.K.

With the ringing in of the New Year comes a look back at 2007. Here's a look back at some of the most important news in the Canadian and global travel industry last year. In 2007, many businesses were concerned with the environment. Tour operators, hotels and airlines were conscious of the sustainable tourism trend, pledging to reducing carbon footprints, whether it was increasing operational efficiencies or introducing fuel or energy surcharges due to the high (and rising) cost of fuel. SIGNATURE STILL OFFERS KITCHENER/WATERLOO
No plans to change winter departures; weekly flights to Mexico and Dominican continue into March 2008

Signature Vacations have made an announcement to let customers in the southern Ontario area know that there are no plans to change winter departures from the Kitchener/Waterloo International Airport.  The tour operator is offering weekly flights to Cancun, Mexico and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.  According to a press release sent out this morning, the company states that "both programs are selling strong and in many cases dates are close to being sold out, especially on Cancun departures." Punta Cana departs on Mondays with the last departure of the season operating on March 10, 2008.  The Cancun program runs on Fridays with its last departure on March 7, 2008.  For availability and pricing details, visit signaturevacations.com.

CANADIAN AIRLINES PACK PAX ON
Canadian airlines planes fly fuller in December, compared with year ago

Canada's largest airlines flew with fewer empty seats in December, compared with a year ago, even as WestJet Airlines, Air Canada and Jazz all increased their overall capacity. Air Canada, Canada's biggest airline, said Monday its December load factor, or proportion of seats filled was 79.3 per cent, up from 78.8 per cent a year ago. Regional carrier Jazz hit a load factor of 73.3 per cent, up from 72.4 per cent last December. Meanwhile, WestJet said its December load factor was 79.3 per cent, up from 78 per cent a year ago.

SK CONSIDERS HI-TECH LICENCES

Saskatchewan is looking at high-tech driver's licences that could be used at the Canada-U.S. border instead of passports. Government Services Minister Dan D'Autremont says the licences will be part of talks today between provincial and state officials in Great Falls, Montana.
