AC ALLOWS ANIMALS IN THE AIR
Transportation agency clears pets to board Air Canada passenger flights
Canadian Press
Air Canada has been ordered to clear pets for takeoff on its domestic passenger flights after a ruling by the Canadian Transportation Agency. The agency has ruled Air Canada must resume carrying small animals in the baggage compartment on flights within Canada as of May 5, and also on international flights. Jadrino Huot, a spokesman for the agency in Ottawa, said the revisions were considered ``unreasonable'' as they exposed pet owners to ``many significant disadvantages''. The ruling came in response to a complaint filed by Peter Griffiths.  Air Canada stopped allowing pets on domestic passenger planes last July, forcing travellers to put their pets on cargo flights. Its plan to do the same for international flights was suspended by the agency last summer. [Full text and pictures]

MORE DELAYS AT HEATHROW
Computer problems lead to more delays at Heathrow's new terminal
Canadian Press

Problems continue to plague the baggage handling system at newly opened Terminal 5 at London's Heathrow Airport. A computer glitch is blamed for the most recent problems at the terminal, opened with great fanfare in late March. The new terminal - solely used by British Airways - ran into severe problems on its first day of operation. In the following days, hundreds of flights were cancelled and thousands of bags left behind because of breakdowns in the new luggage handling system. The new problems were a bitter blow for British Airways. After enduring one of its most difficult weeks, the airline said Friday that the terminal was ``running very well.'' But today, the airline announced that 12 short-haul flights had to be cancelled. Meanwhile, departure boards at Terminal 5 showed delays of up to three hours. [Full text and pictures]

SKYBUS TO SHUT DOWN
Canadian Press
Low-cost carrier Skybus Airlines is shutting down Saturday and plans to file for bankruptcy protection next week, becoming the latest of the airlines in the U.S. to fall because of rising fuel costs and a slowing economy. The announcement Friday came less than a year after Skybus started up at Port Columbus International Airport, offering several $10 flights. The airline's situation worsened in recent weeks, said Skybus spokesman Bob Tenenbaum. Fuel prices and the worsening economy combined to be insurmountable for a new carrier, said chief executive Michael Hodge.
EU APPROVES USE OF CELLPHONES IN FLIGHT
Canadian Press
European Union regulators have opened the way for air travelers to use their cellphones on flights throughout the continent. The European Commission says new regulations it approved today will set a common Europe-wide standard by which passengers can safely use their mobile phones to talk, text or send e-mails on aircraft. The new rules pave the way for airlines to launch onboard mobile services later this year. Vivianne Reding, the EU's telecommunications commissioner, is warning operators to keep the cost of calls made on aircraft at a reasonable level.
