Jamaica Product Exchange kicks off 18th edition in Kingston Charmaine Pang
On Friday April 25th, the 18th edition of the Jamaica Product Exchange (JAPEX) began in Kingston, Jamaica. It's the first time in several years that JAPEX has been hosted in the capital city. Tour operators and media from all over the world are in town to see for themselves what Jamaica has to offer in terms of tourism product. Over 100 exhibitors and hundreds of buyers from Canada, the U.S., U.K., Russia, Mexico and Latin America. John Lynch, Chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) and Jamaica's new Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Edmund Bartlett, hosted key tour operators and travel trade media at a luncheon at the Devonshire House yesterday afternoon. Lynch said that "tourism is the centrepiece of the Jamaican economy", and Minister Bartlett agreed.

CITC announces events planned for the second quarter of 2008 CITC events include... May 13: Tele-seminar presentation available to everyone in the country at the same time, on "Generating Niche Market Sales". Steve Gillick, CITC’s President noted that the trend to offer niche market tours (and there are over 400 identifiable niche markets) has caught on and more travel counsellors want to find out. The seminar is scheduled for May 13, from 2:30-3:30 pm Eastern Time. May 29: Train-the-trainer 1/2 day session on the TICO Education Standard Exams, in the downtown Toronto area. This session is for industry trainers, educators and others who wish to prepare their staff for the TICO exams. May 30-31: The twentieth Annual Educators Update will take place at the Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University in Downtown Toronto.

| SECOND CHARGE FOR SECOND BAG |

Air Canada to charge for second checked bag on North American flights Canadian Press Air Canada announced plans Friday to charge its lowest-fare customers $25 for second checked bags on North American flights as part of an effort to combat rising fuel costs. The new charge will start July 15 for passengers who purchase Tango and Tango Plus tickets. Customers can still receive a discount when travelling without checked luggage. The new policy doesn't affect international travel, which will continue to allow two checked bags within weight limits at no additional cost. North American flights connecting to international travel also aren't affected.

The financing for one of its Airbus A340-600 aircraft has earned the Abu Dhabi-based airline Airfinance Journal’s ‘Middle East Deal of the Year’ award. The deal, worth USD $148 million, involved a French tax lease, the first of its kind for Etihad Airways. It was also the first time that three French banks had worked together on a French lease for a Middle East airline. The award was presented to Etihad’s chief financial officer James Rigney at the 28th Annual New York Airfinance Conference held in New York. James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ chief executive, said: "These are exciting times for Etihad as the airline continues to grow and establish itself firmly on the global stage. The strong support we continue to receive from the financial community is extremely gratifying. The local, regional and international relationships we are building through partnership deals such as this are critical to our development and future success."
