DELTA’S $6.4BQ1 LOSS Canadian Press Wednesday, Delta Air Lines Inc. announced that its loss widened in the first quarter to US$6.39 billion because of soaring fuel prices and the steep decline in the company's market value. The results missed Wall Street expectations, despite a 12 per cent increase in sales. That compares with a loss of $130 million that Delta reported in the year-ago January-March quarter, when it was still in bankruptcy. |

US Q1 LOSS BLAMED ON FUEL COSTS Canadian Press US Airways Group Inc. said Thursday it swung to a loss in the first quarter, punished like other airlines by the rising cost of jet fuel. But the Tempe, Arizona-based carrier didn't lose as much as analysts had expected. With oil prices down slightly, US Airways shares jumped more than 13 per cent in late afternoon trading. US Airways said it lost US$236 million, or $2.56 per share, in the January-March period versus a profit of $66 million, or 70 cents per share, a year earlier. |
