CSTAR, ACTA TEAM UP ON PAPER TICKET ISSUE
Both organizations seek to delay elimination of paper tickets; sign petition online
As the deadline for the elimination of paper MPDs and paper OPTATs draws near, CSTAR and ACTA are working together to do all things possible to delay any removal of paper ticket stock and to continue to allow the use of paper tickets until IATA and its member carriers can provide a fully implemented ET environment. In a release sent out this morning, the two associations note:
It is simply unacceptable for Canadian travel agencies to be faced with the removal of paper tickets when IATA and its member carriers have not provided reasonable and practical solutions to handle those transactions where a paper ticket is still required and an ET is not possible.
Read on for more information, and for a link to sign an online petition. [Full text and pictures]

WHERE HAVE ALL THE YANKEES GONE?
All provinces but one record declines as fewer Americans visit Canada in February
Canadian Press
Statistics Canada says bad winter weather in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes is largely to blame for declines in the number of Americans visiting Canada in February. Every province but Saskatchewan recorded declines in inbound border crossings by U.S. residents travelling by car as  Americans made a million overnight trips to Canada in February. That's 3.8 per cent fewer overnight visits than in January and the lowest level since November 1996. Canadians made 3.7 million trips to the United States in February, 0.3 per cent fewer trips than in January. Overall, Canadians made 1.6 million overnight trips to the United States in February, 0.7 per cent more than in January and the second highest  level in 16 years. But total travel to the United States fell 0.3 per cent to 3.7 million trips. [Full text and pictures]

UNITED RAISES FUEL SURCHARGE - AGAIN
Canadian Press
United Airlines said Tuesday it raised its domestic fuel surcharge by US$10 to $20 round trip, less than a week after America's second-largest carrier increased fares to offset rising fuel expenses. The move comes after oil prices topped US$114 a barrel for the first time, and will likely put pressure on other airlines to follow suit. Travellers in some markets who were paying a surcharge of $25 one-way will now see that charge increase to $35.
US AIRWAYS TO CHARGE MORE FOR WINDOW, AISLE SEATS
Canadian Press
US Airways says it will begin charging passengers extra for an aisle or window seat on some of its planes. President Scott Kirby told employees Wednesday in a letter that the carrier needs to find ways to offset high fuel costs that are plaguing the industry. The new program, which begins May 7, will charge passengers US$5 per flight for an aisle or window seat in the first several rows in coach. Passengers will be able to buy the seats on the web for all US Airways-operated flights except the US Airways Shuttle and Colgan-operated Saab 340 aircraft. Dividend miles preferred members will be offered the Choice Seats program for free.
