UNITED AND CONTINENTAL TO MERGE?
United, Continental eye potential partnership after Delta Northwest deal
Canadian Press

United Airlines and Continental Airlines each signalled interest in industry consolidation Tuesday, with the two increasingly seen as a potential pair that would leapfrog the newly proposed Delta-Northwest team as the world's largest carrier. While the two airlines were publicly mum about their preferences for a partner, it was clear the Delta-Northwest agreement had broken the logjam on industry consolidation and breathed new urgency into talks between United and Continental on how they could combine. Other tie-ups also are possible. Wall Street analysts and other airline experts see another attempted pairing of large U.S. airlines as almost inevitable but indicated the industry's future under two mega-carriers would remain volatile amid record fuel prices and economic weakness. U.S. DOUBLES AIR COMPENSATIONS
Canadian Press
Passengers who get bumped off overbooked U.S. airline flights will soon be eligible for much higher compensation. The most compensation will apply to travellers bumped onto another flight that sees them arrive at their domestic destination more than two hours after their original arrival time. In such cases, they will have to be paid the full price of their fare up to a maximum of $800.
UNITED RAISES FUEL SURCHARGE - AGAIN
Canadian Press
UAL Corp.'s United Airlines said Tuesday it raised its domestic fuel surcharge by US$10 to $20 round trip, less than a week after America's second-largest carrier increased fares to offset rising fuel expenses. The move comes after oil prices topped US$114 a barrel for the first time, and will likely put pressure on other airlines to follow suit. Travellers in some markets who were paying a surcharge of $25 one-way will now see that charge increase to $35, spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said.
