| WHEN WILL 787 FLY? |
|
Boeing's new 787 won't fly until November or December
Boeing Co. will not begin test flights of its new 787 jetliner until mid-November or mid-December, months later than originally planned. It is taking longer than anticipated to get the first plane ready, the company said Wednesday. Boeing initially aimed to begin flight-testing within a month long window in late August, but early last month acknowledged that the first flight might not happen until October. The midsize, long-haul 787 is the first large commercial jetliner being made mostly from composites, which Boeing has promised will make the plane more fuel efficient and cheaper to maintain, because carbon fibre-reinforced plastics are lighter and more durable than aluminium.

| CARNIVAL NOT TO PROCEED |
|
Carnival & TUI withdraw from joint venture to form new cruise brand for Germany Carnival Corporation & plc announced yesterday that it has agreed with Germany’s TUI to withdraw its antitrust filings with the German Federal Cartel Agency, Undeskartellamt, and the Austrian Federal Cartel Agency, Bundeswettbewerbsbehörde. Carnival and TUI had agreed to form a joint venture to develop a new cruise brand for Germany. Carnival cited an extremely difficult regulatory environment in Germany, which makes it impossible to close the proposed joint venture this fiscal year. Failure to do so would create adverse tax consequences for the company that would impact the economics of the transaction. As a result of the regulatory and tax issues Carnival and TUI have agreed not to proceed with the proposed joint venture but will continue to explore other opportunities.
