Travel industry profits to reach a new high for second year, because of strong travel spending by Canadians and healthy price increases. ``After three years of improvement, accommodation profits are expected to rise slightly to $982 million in 2007,'' said Michael Burt, Senior Economist at the Conference Board. CUBA CELEBRATES VARADERO

A delightful late-summer boat cruise, hosted yesterday by the Cuba Tourist Board in Toronto, marked the end of summer and a look ahead to the winter travel season. Yesterday’s event focused on Varadero, one of Canadians’ favourite places in Cuba.  In addition to Carlos Zambrano, Director of the Cuba Tourist Board, Toronto and his staff, the Consul General of Cuba, Laureano Cardoso, and Varadero’s Deputy Tourism Minister, Jose Antonio Zerquera, were present. Both travel agents and the media were invited to learn more about Varadero, mingle and enjoy live music while cruising Lake Ontario.  [Full text and pictures]

Hurricane Henriette threatened Mexico's mainland Wednesday after punishing the Los Cabos resorts, while far to the south, the weakening remnants of hurricane Felix dumped heavy rain over Central America, forcing thousands to flee. Henriette apparently caused no deaths at it struck Los Cabos at the tip of the Baja California peninsula on Tuesday, but it remained dangerous. The hurricane's top winds were about 120 kilometres an hour, and little change in strength was expected before it hits the mainland coast south of Arizona. Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean Cruises changed itineraries for six cruises to avoid ports in affect areas. [Full text and pictures]

When travellers book and pay in full they can save: 10 per cent off when booking 12 months prior to departure, 7.5 per cent for booking 10 months prior to departure, 5 per cent for booking 7 months prior to departure and 2.5 per cent for booking 4 months prior to departure. bmi HEATHROW EXPANSION
bmi will be adding 17 new destinations and new in-flight products to the fall line-up
bmi announced the largest-ever expansion of its route network yesterday. Seventeen new destinations are now on sale from Heathrow airport. New destinations include: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Aleppo, Syria; Almaty, Kazakhstan; Amman, Jordan; Ankara, Turkey; Baku, Azerbaijan; Beirut, Lebanon; Bishkek, Kyrgystan; Cairo, Egypt (November 4); Dakar, Senegal; Damascus, Syria; Ekaterinburg, Russia; Freetown, Sierra Leone; Khartoum, Sudan; Tbilisi, Georgia; Tehran, Iran; Yerevan, Armenia. bmi will also be providing new daily direct services to Cairo, Amman and Beirut. The new routes, starting October 28, 2007, will operate from Heathrow’s Terminal 1 with an improved timetable for business travellers. [Full text and pictures]

Yesterday, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced the promotion of Adam Goldstein to president and CEO and Dan Hanrahan, President of Celebrity Cruises will be adding CEO to his title. Both officers will continue to report to Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Chairman and CEO Richard D.
