HURRICANE FELIX TO HONDURAS, BELIZE
Felix sends 250 km/h Category 5 winds on the way to Honduras and Belize
Hurricane Felix
Hurricane Felix strengthened into a Category 5 monster storm early Tuesday, forecasters said, just as it prepares to make landfall near the Nicaragua-Honduras border. Felix's top winds were about 250 km/h as it headed west early Tuesday, and forecasters warned it could strengthen again before landfall along the Miskito Coast. From there, it was projected to rake northern Honduras, slam into southern Belize on Wednesday and then cut across northern Guatemala and southern Mexico, well south of Texas. Grupo Taca Airlines airlifted tourists from the Honduran island of Roatan, popular for its pristine reefs and diving resorts. About 1,000 people were taken off the island. Another 1,000 people were removed from low-lying coastal areas and smaller islands. [Full text and pictures]

Hurricane Felix passed over the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao early Sunday morning, with little incident. Official statements have been released by Aruba and Bonaire. The Aruba Tourism Authority’s official statement on Felix noted that the hurricane passed over 100 km north of Aruba on Sunday, September 2nd. The Authority reported that Aruba “did not experience any hurricane effects, just tropical storm conditions such as rain during the morning hours, a few wind gusts and some rough surf along the coastlines.” No damage had been reported as of Sunday afternoon. Reina Beatrix International Airport reopened at 12 noon on Sunday and all flights, except inbound American Airlines flights, were on schedule. [Full text and pictures]
