BARCELO PUNTA CANA TO UNDERGO US $14M RENO
The Barceló Punta Cana Resort in the Dominican Republic is undergoing an extensive renovation to its public spaces and guest rooms and adding an additional new pool and theater facilities.  When complete, the $14 million dollar renovation will make this beachfront all-inclusive property a Premium level hotel within the Barceló portfolio and upgrade the guest experience to a luxury resort level.

Yesterday evening St. Lucia and her Tourism Minister, Senator the Honourable Allen Chastanet, held an intimate celebration for St. Lucia at Toronto’s Four Seasons Hotel. The evening was designed to showcase all the new things St. Lucia is offering, including increased retail space, seven new properties, golf courses and improved attractions. Anguilla’s Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Investments and Tourism, The Honorable Victor Banks and the Anguilla Tourist Board brought a little piece of their world to Toronto’s Park Hyatt Hotel yesterday afternoon. For an all-too-brief two hours, guests of the Anguilla 40 Luncheon were treated to the sights, sounds and tastes of the islands in the British West Indies, now celebrating their 40th year of independence.  Approximately 50 members of the media and travel industry were on hand to celebrate Anguilla’s history and burgeoning tourism industry. Greeted by the live music of one of Anguilla’s foremost musicians, guests sipped on cocktails and acquainted themselves with the islands through various displays in the room.  [Full text and pictures]

CANADIAN VISITS TO NEW HAMPSHIRE SOAR

As the dollar rises, more Canadians visit NH; record-breaking figures are up by 9.5%
As the Canadian dollar reached parity last week for the first time in 31 years it wasn’t just the loonie that was soaring to new heights.    Canadians visited New Hampshire in record numbers with 359,800 visiting the Granite state in 2006 – a 9.5% increase over the previous year when 328,800 visited.   (Figures are for visits of one or more nights).   The state not only fared well in overall visitation figures but also showed significant increases in other key areas such as visitor spending and visit nights. The state’s “no sales tax policy” paired with the rising value of the Canadian dollar this past year has provided the momentum for increased growth in these categories.  [Full text and pictures]

NEW U.S.-CHINA ROUTES FOR DELTA, UNITED
U.S. transportation secretary awards new routes to China

Delta Air Lines Inc. and United Airlines have won two coveted new air routes to China's financial and manufacturing capitals and four other new routes have been proposed for 2009, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters said Tuesday. The announcement was part of an agreement signed in July with China to double the number of daily flights between the U.S. and China over the next five years. The agreement also allows for new cargo flights operating to and from the two countries. Atlanta-based Delta will fly a route from Atlanta to Shanghai available in April, said Peters. Delta's flight to China's financial hotspot is the first to China by a U.S. airline from the Southeast. [Full text and pictures]
