Last week’s question asked readers how they felt about the number of travel agencies in the country. The majority, 70%, said they felt there were “too many” travel agencies in Canada. The rest, 30%, said there were “just enough” agencies in the country.

Typhoon Krosa drenched China's southeast on Sunday after killing five people on Taiwan and prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people on the mainland, officials said. In Vietnam, the death toll from typhoon Lekima, which hit the country's central coast late Wednesday, rose to 55, with other 16 people still missing, officials said Sunday.

MEXICANA AIRLINES AWARDS AGENCIES

Travel agencies in Latin America, the United States and Canada that generated the most revenues for Mexicana Airlines were presented with awards at the “Fiestas Patrias” event, which has been held since 1983 to celebrate Mexico’s independence. The awards, which are organized in conjunction with other major industry sponsors, are intended to reward travel agencies for their loyalty and commitment to promoting Mexico as a tourist destination. Prizes go to the three agencies with the highest sales at each destination Mexicana flies to. This year, the Toronto travel agencies that took home awards were: 1st place, CanAg Travel; 2nd place, Moreno Travel; and 3rd place, Skylink. Mexicana will continue to support travel agencies in their efforts to promote Mexico as a tourist destination abroad.

Certified Asia Specialist (CAS) FAM participants recently returned from a 7 days trip to Hong Kong & Macau sponsored by the respective tourism boards and EVA Air.  In Hong Kong they visited the latest attraction, Ngong Ping Village on Lantau Island and saw one of its landmarks, the giant statue of Buddha. The group also visited modern & historic attractions in Macau to enjoy a combination of Portuguese & Chinese hospitality. Macau now rivals Las Vegas with its numerous gaming & resort developments. DOMINICA APPOINTS TOURISM CEO/MINISTER

Steve Bornn to become CEO and Director of Tourism for Dominica
The Discover Dominica Authority recently announced that Steve Bornn has been selected by its Board of Directors to serve as the organization's first Chief Executive Officer and Director of Tourism, effective immediately. In his new position, Mr. Bornn will be chiefly responsible for the formulation and implementation of the tourism strategy and marketing plan as well as the stewardship of the Dominica destination brand.  In addition, he will be charged with monitoring and evaluating organizational performance; staff development; maintaining productive relationships with key stakeholders in Dominica and internationally; and ensuring the sound management of the new entity. Mr. Bornn is a 28-year veteran of the tourism industry with extensive executive and Caribbean leadership experience.   Bornn previously served as Director of Marketing for the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism.
