| TRAVELHOTNEWS PROFILE: Doug Patterson |
The boy wonder: President of Insight Vacations took a year off before college, entered the travel industry and never looked back Charmaine Pang
| Doug Patterson, president of Insight Vacations | | Doug Patterson, president of Insight Vacations, says he's been in the travel business "for the better part of twenty years". He has been working with motorcoach operators for 18 years, and his entry into the industry was purely coincidental. Patterson's story begins in his birth city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The snowy landscapes of 'Winterpeg' gave way to Vancouver, where the Patterson family relocated for four years. Patterson, an only child, followed his father to Scarborough, Ontario, where most of his schooling took place. He had good grades that would allow him to get into the university of his choice, but, as he says, "I realized at that stage that I was probably going to spend more time immersed in the local pub than I was in the learning curve, so I decided to take a year off." Read on for the full story.

Travel deficit is at highest level ever; Canadians spent $6.7B outside the country in Q3 of 2007 Canadian Press
Canada's international travel deficit climbed to its highest level ever in the third quarter of 2007, as spending by Canadians in the United States reached record levels. Statistics Canada says the travel deficit - the difference between spending by Canadian residents abroad and spending by foreigners in the country - jumped to about $2.5 billion in the third quarter, up $281 million from the second quarter. The increase in the deficit was fuelled by record spending by Canadian residents abroad, specifically in the United States as the loonie made significant gains against the U.S. greenback.

| AIR LINKS BETWEEN B.C. AND ASIA STRENGTHENED |
Cathay Pacific to add 4 new flights between Vancouver and Hong Kong Transportation links between B.C. and the Asia Pacific were further enhanced during B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell's mission to China as Cathay Pacific Airways announced it will add four new flights per week between Vancouver and Hong Kong, beginning March 30, 2008. Campbell said the increased service will help to achieve a 75 per cent growth in passengers and a doubling of air cargo through YVR by 2020. The announcement boosts the number of Cathay Pacific flights between Hong Kong and Vancouver, the airline's Canadian headquarters, to 21 from 17. The four new flights per week will see nearly 1,000 new passenger seats available per week, consistent with the Canada-Hong Kong bi-lateral air agreement.
