QANTAS PLEADS GUILTY TO CARGO PRICE-FIXING
Qantas Airways pleads guilty to cargo price fixing, to pay US$61M criminal fine
Canadian Press
Qantas Airways admitted to fixing prices on international air cargo shipments and agreed to pay a US$61 million fine, the U.S. Justice Department said Tuesday. Qantas sought to eliminate competition by fixing the rates for shipments of cargo to and from the U.S and elsewhere from at least January 2000 through February 2006, according to the charges filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.During the time covered by the felony charge, Qantas was the largest carrier of cargo between the U.S. and Australia, earning more than $600 million from its cargo flights between the two countries, according to the Justice Department. Earlier this year, British Airways PLC and Korean Air Lines Co. Ltd. each pleaded guilty and agreed to pay separate $300 million criminal fines for their roles in conspiracies to fix the prices of passenger and cargo flights. [Full text and pictures]

Canada and European Union begin 'open skies' talks in Brussels
Canadian Press
Canada and the European Union have begun talks on an ``open skies'' air transport treaty. Officials met in Brussels on Tuesday for a first round of negotiations aimed at reducing restrictions on airlines and allowing them to provide new services. A deal would allow Canadian airlines to fly from Canada to any European Union destination, collect passengers, and then continue to a third destination somewhere else in the world. European carriers would be allowed to do likewise in Canada. Canada already has bilateral air transport agreements with 19 of the 27 European Union member states. Under a Canada-European Union agreement, Canada's air transport relations with all 27 member states would be governed by a single regime. [Full text and pictures]
