The California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC) in partnership with a handful of California ski resorts and visitors bureaus have come together to kick off the ski season with multi-million-dollar improvements, including upgrades and promotions around its ski and snowboard offerings. California gets an average of 400 inches of snow annually, offers 43,000 acres of skiing and snowboarding, and over 30 resorts for Canadians to visit, says CTTC Executive Director Caroline Beteta. SCENIC'S $500 SAVINGS
Save your clients up to $500 on a Scenic Tours European river cruise by paying in US funds
Canadian travellers can save as much as $500 per couple on a European river cruise with Scenic tours by paying in US dollars. "Because of the very long lead time needed in brochure production, our brochures reflect a greater differential between the US and Canadian dollars than exists at the moment," says Scenic's vice-president of sales and marketing for North America Nicole DeWilde. "So we are very happy to let travellers know that we do accept payment in US funds from our Canadian passengers." The difference averages $250 per passenger, and Scenic will be offering a series of two week cruises starting in June of 2008. Dates are already available for 2009 sailings, with itineraries from Amsterdam to Budapest and beyond. Scenic Tours' ships feature spacious balconies on 80 per cent of rooms available, butler service, escorted shore excursions and a strict 'no tipping' policy. For further information, visit scenictours.com.

HALF MOON SAYS NO TO SURCHARGE
Half Moon Resort, Jamaica, will not impose US$10/day energy surcharge to guests
Half Moon Rose Hall
Richard Whitfield, Managing Director of Jamaica's Half Moon Resort says no to a proposed energy surcharge being sanctioned by the island's tourism lobby group, the Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association. The proposed surcharge gives hotels in Jamaica the option of adding a charge of up to US$10 per room to nightly room rates in an effort to combat the rising costs of fuel.  "We agree that the hike in fuel prices has a ripple effect on energy costs and other expenses. However, our focus to combat the potential increase in costs is to carefully and effectively manage our consumption resort-wide. This is not a charge we want to pass on to our guests," Whitfield said. Read on to learn how the resort is saving on energy. [Full text and pictures]
