BA FINED FOR FUEL COLLUSION WITH VIRGIN
US, UK regulators fine BA US$550M for fuel surcharge price-fixing with Virgin Atlantic
British Airways PLC was fined almost US$550 million on Wednesday by U.S. and British regulators after the airline admitted to colluding with rival Virgin Atlantic over fuel surcharges on long-haul flights.  BA was fined 121.5 million pounds (US$246 million) by Britain's Office of Fair Trading and $300 million by the U.S. Department of Justice after parallel transatlantic investigations.  An investigation in the UK continues into whether any individuals committed criminal acts. The U.S. investigation is continuing, and officials did not dismiss the possibility that charges could be brought against individuals as well. [Full text and pictures]

CARGO CONSPIRACY WITH BA, KOREAN AIR, LUFTHANSA
BA, Korean Air, Lufthansa engaged in price fixing; Lufthansa alerts authorities, will not face sanctions
British Airways was fined US$550 million for admitting collusion with Virgin Atlantic over long-haul fuel surcharges in the U.S. and U.K.  Now, U.S. officials also said BA and Korean Air Lines were involved in a conspiracy with German carrier Lufthansa AG to fix charges for international cargo shipments. The U.S. Justice Department said Lufthansa would not face sanctions because it had come forward to authorities. Korean Air faces a $300M fine, brought forward by the U.S. Justice Department, for colluding with competitors to fix fuel surcharges on cargo shipments to the U.S., and fixing some passenger fares from the U.S. to Korea. Korean Air will plead guilty to price fixing in the United States. [Full text and pictures]

NEXUS HITS HALIFAX
Pre-approved travel document already accepted at YUL, YVR, YYZ and YOW
Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day said that a new security program at several airports across Canada will help speed up cross-border travel. Under the new system, low-risk, pre-approved travellers can purchase a NEXUS card and move easily through the border clearance process between Canada and the United States. Day was in Halifax to open the next step in the NEXUS system, which allows frequent travellers to pass through customs faster. The NEXUS system uses non-invasive iris-recognition technology to identify travellers, and Day says there are already 130,000 cardholders using the program at airports in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. The new system will be introduced in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg in the coming months, and it can be used by people travelling by air, land or sea. (CP)
