AIRPORT SECURITY MEASURES RELAX A LITTLE MORE
Limited liquids, gels and aerosols allowed on board.
Travellers will soon be able, with some restrictions, to bring small amounts of liquids, gels and aerosols onboard aircraft. Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, along with the Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, yesterday announced changes to the aviation security measures put in place on August 10 that will allow passengers to bring limited quantities of these items with them when they travel, while maintaining a heightened level of security.

In the UK airline staff have attacked the government after being prevented from taking on board equipment and medicine they claim is vital to do their jobs. Since the terror alerts of August 10, British pilots and crew have been barred from taking contact lens solution, weather and navigation charts on their flights from UK domestic airports. The government recently relaxed the restrictions on hand luggage for travellers but, according to the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa), its members are facing tighter restrictions.

Galileo signs six e-ticketable carriers

Galileo, a leading global distribution system (GDS) and a subsidiary of Travelport Inc., has signed up six new e-ticketable carriers on the GDS which takes the total to 80.  The carriers are Aerosvit-Ukranian Airlines, Air Tahiti Nui, El Al, Kingfisher, China Airlines and Royal Air Maroc. By January 2007, IATA will require 70% of all tickets to be electronic and Galileo is currently well ahead of target with more than 80% of tickets issued so far this year being e-tickets. Galileo's e-ticketing is not limited to point to point journeys. Complex itineraries, across multiple destinations can also be e-ticketed.

Air Canada Vacations extends hours

In an effort to provide better service to travel agents, Air Canada Vacations has extended its Inside Sales hours of operation. "Consistent service level improvements are a major priority for us. It's an ongoing effort we firmly believe in," said Air Canada Vacations Director of Sales, Nino Montagnese. "In addition to these latest initiatives based on agency feedback from a series of recent road shows, we've also increased staff to answer more calls on queue eliminating voice mail."  For agents calling from Ontario as well as Atlantic and Western Canada regions, the office is now open weekdays between 8 a.m.-8 p.m. ET.
