Israel working to get tourism back on track

Dani Shahal, outgoing tourism director for the Israel Government Tourist office, was fêted last week at a reception to celebrate his 5 year 'tour of duty' in Canada.  Dignitaries, colleagues and friends gathered at Toronto's swanky Windsor Arms Hotel, for an evening of congratulations, nostalgia and sadness at the departure of a man who had befriended many during his term in Toronto.  Arie Sommer, tourism commissioner for North and South America, joked that Shahal had done such a good job, that not only had he been kept on a year longer than the usual 4 year term, a replacement has yet to be found.  (Sommer, who is based in New York, will serve as interim successor until the position is filled).

Amadeus Moneydirect, the leading supplier of online payment systems for the Australian and New Zealand travel industry, has launched its new EFT on Request (EoR) module with VIP Travel Centres. The Australian company has become the first to develop an automated payment and allocations system between travel agents and tourism operators. The first online reservation system to use the EFT on Request system is "a major breakthrough for small tourism operators on narrow margins," said says Scott Rigby, General Manager, VIP Travel Centres in Brisbane.

Flight attendant minimums maintained

Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon's decision to maintain current minimum requirements for flight attendant staffing on large aircraft is a victory for common sense and passenger safety, according to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents 8,500 flight attendants. In declaring that the government would not be tabling amendments to reduce flight attendant requirements earlier today in the House of Commons, the minister informed the House of Commons that, "the Conservative government is committed to aviation safety and recognizes the important contribution that flight attendants make, particularly in emergency evacuations."

Air Mauritius raises onboard humidity
System increases passenger comfort levels on aircraft

In a world first that will bring significant improvement to the comfort of its long-haul passengers, Air Mauritius, is the first scheduled airline in the world, to equip one of its Airbus A340-300 aircraft with a system that will measurably raise the air humidity in the cabin. The CAIR, Swedish-designed equipment is presently installed in one of the aircraft and a retrofit programme is planned for the entire A340 fleet. Raising the cabin air relative humid ity level from the present 5% to close to 25%, translates into several benefits.  Passengers can sleep better, food and wines taste better and skin, eyes and nasal passages do not get as dry.
