| Bangkok | Fears that the Thai military coup would affect tourists in the country have, so far, proved groundless. The military overthrew the government in a surprise bloodless coup that elicited no advance warnings from either Canadian or U.S. governments. The UK Foreign Office is now advising visitors to the Bangkok "to avoid moving around the city, avoid the areas surrounding Government buildings and locations where large crowds appear to be gathering, as well as any demonstrations and to refrain from approaching military vehicles and personnel".

| Hillcrest Tour Group closes |

Retail outlet continues Toronto-area tour operator Hillcrest Tours has closed its doors after over twenty years in business. There is no evidence that the Travel Industry fund will be affected. Arrangements are being made for customers and all issues being dealt with by company owner George Street. Hillcrest Tours was part of the Hillcrest Tour Group Ltd, which also includes retail agency, Hillcrest Travel Service. The retail operation is expected to continue business.

| Hurrican Wilma hits Cozumel | New cruise piers across the Caribbean are being designed to withstand up to Category 5 hurricanes. The new piers will be strong enough to survive winds of up to 155 mph 249 km/hr enabling cruise ships to quickly return to destinations, decreasing schedule disruptions. Carnival's new Grand Turk pier was the first in the region built to the new specifications and apparently at least four others are under construction.

| Bata Shoe Museum | The Eastern Canada Chapter of the Pacific Asia Travel Association is holding a tour of Toronto's Bata Shoe Museum on October 15. A specially arranged escorted tour through the exhibition of Chinese children's shoes - "Watched by Heaven. Tied to the Earth. Summoning Animal Protection for Chinese Children" - is planned. Displayed shoes from elsewhere in Asia will also be viewed. Friends, relatives and colleagues are welcome to join the 2 p.m. event, which costs $10 for members and $12 for non-members.
