John headed for Cabo San Lucas

As Hurricane John roared towards the resort of Cabo San Lucas Thursday, fifteen thousand residents of the the Baja peninsula area were ordered to evacuate to higher ground and tourists desperately sought flights home. Heavy rain and high seas soaked beaches on the mainland's Pacific coast Wednesday and early Thursday before it turned toward Baja California, where it was scheduled to hit the peninsula's southern tip today. Officials were preparing to evacuate 10,000 people in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo and at least 5,000 others in La Paz, the capital of the state of Baja California del Sur. Shop owners boarded up windows and 15 shelters were set up to house the evacuees. Hotel workers stripped rooms of light fixtures and furniture, in case plate-glass windows were broken by the storm.

Bookings for the first-ever tandem crossing of QE2 and Queen Victoria on January 6, 2008, have already begun, as Cunard launches its 2008 World Cruise brochure today. The two Queens will be greeted in New York harbour by flagship Queen Mary 2.  The first time the three Cunard Queens will meet. QE2 and the newly delivered Queen Victoria will depart their homeport of Southampton for New York at the start of their 2008 World Cruises. The Queen Victoria on its maiden Atlantic crossing will be accompanied by QE2 making her 804th. The crossing will take a week.

BA to offer Registered Traveler program at Kennedy Airport

British Airways is giving the its business travelers and other frequent flyers the opportunity to pay an annual fee of about US $80 for separate and faster (?) security screening at New York's Kennedy Airport. The carrier signed a deal to offer a Registered Traveler program this fall for its operations at the US airport. Under the programme rules established by the Transportation Security Administration, in order to qualify, participants must provide background information about themselves so they can be pre-screened by the TSA. They must also provide a biometric identifier such as a fingerprint for a biometric identity card. The programme, called Clear, is operated by Verified Identity Pass - a private sector company.

The Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA) in cooperation with CzechTourism Canada, CzechTourism Prague, CSA Czech Airlines and MADI Travel Market is pleased to announce the organization of an Edutour (FAM trip) to the Czech Republic this fall. "It has been over 5 years since ACTA coordinated this type of event and we thought it was time to renew with this type of activity while giving the participants the opportunity to meet with travel agent colleagues in the Czech Republic and exchange on common issues," stated Christiane Théberge, Vice president of Public Affairs for ACTA. "When CzechTourism Canada approached the association to cooperate in promoting this exciting program, we were happy to get involved", added Théberge.
