The Mexico Tourism Board hosted an event at the venerable Casa Loma in Toronto last night to and introduce its online travel agent programme and showcase its World Heritage sites. Cesar Castaņeda, director of the Tourism Board, welcomed the hundred or so industry professionals in attendance and introduced Jane Custer, president of Destination Ventures Ltd., who outlined the purpose and concept of the new Magic of Mexico specialist programme.

Canadian Affair company rebranded

Canada Flights and Holidays now Air Transat Holidays
In the UK it has been announced that Canada Flights and Holidays has been rebranded as Air Transat Holidays following the takeover of parent Canadian Affair by the Canadian company earlier this year. The renamed operator will begin accepting online bookings from agents next month offering up to 57 flights a week to Canada on Thomas Cook Airlines and MyTravel Airways. The company will have 400,000 return seats next summer and travellers will be able to mix and match airlines and return airports.

Charlottetown to host cruise symposium
Cruising has a big impact on local economy
Charlottetown
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, has been selected to host the 2007 Canada-New England Cruise Symposium, June 19-21, 2007 at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel. Over 150 delegates are expected to attend, including cruise executives, industry suppliers, marketing companies and officials from Canadian and New England ports. Charlottetown's $16.8 million waterfront development initiative is expected to more than double the pier's current length, allowing for much larger vessels to visit. The expansion, scheduled for completion in mid 2007, will also include a new Cruise Welcome Centre.

Atlantic Canada shows off for the trade
Since 1994 the Atlantic Showcase has helped to grow Atlantic Canada's tourism industry by increasing motor coach activity and integrating the region as a travel destination in more North American tour packages. This year's Showcase, produced by the Atlantic Canada Tourism Partnership in Charlottetown, PEI October 3 to 5 was no exception, as more than 170 Atlantic Canadian travel industry participants representing over 116 companies met with more than 50 buyers from over 42 North American companies.

Egypt introduces worldwide ad campaign
Gift of the Sun highlights warmth and friendliness
The Egyptian Tourism Authority introduced its new worldwide television advertising campaign titled The Gift of the Sun. To be launched this month, The Gift of the Sun campaign, will be rolled out across Asia, Europe, and North America over the next 24 months. This campaign is expected to build on the success of Red Sea Riviera and other campaigns, which were key factors in helping Egypt host a record 8.6 million visitors last year.

China is fastest growing international visitor market to LA

The Los Angeles convention and Visitors Bureau has opened the first city-level tourism office licensed to operate in China. Los Angeles is the first of what is likely to be a growing number of tourism offices representing US cities eager to position themselves to compete for the world's largest international travel market.  The office represents both LA INC. and Los Angeles World Airports.

Airbus clinches $10.8 billion deal
Airbus has agreed to sell 150 single-isle A320 jets to China for $10.8 billion. The Toulouse-based airplane maker will also build an assembly plant in the Chinese city of Tianjin. The sale was agreed Thursday during a visit to Beijing by French President Jacques Chirac. The deal, one of Airbus' biggest, gives Airbus a lift following the problems caused by delays to the delivery of its A380 superjumbo.
WestJet soaring
WestJet reported its best quarter in its history, with record net earnings of $52.8 million - an increase of 74.5 % compared to the $30.3 million it earned in the third quarter 2005. For the first 9 months of 2006, the company posted net earnings of $88 million - an astounding increase over the $23 million in 2005.
