New research by the British company Webcredible, shows that online travel companies are losing the very people they are trying to attract by sending them to rival websites. A study of more than 25 travel websites revealed that hidden charges, tricky and awkward search functions and problems with booking forms, are among the top mistakes made by some of the biggest online travel agencies. Butch Kerzner dies in helicopter accident
Resort tycoon Howard 'Butch' Kerzner and three other people died yesterday when the helicopter in which they were travelling crashed near the popular tourist resort if Sosua in the Dominican Republic. Kerzner was in the DR surveying potential development sites. Another passenger and two pilots also died in the accident, which had no survivors.

Sunny skies for Canjet
Carrier confirms it will fly Sunquest and Transat this winter

CanJet Airlines has confirmed that it has finalized agreements with Sunquest Vacations and Transat Tours for the 2006/2007 season.  Julie Gossen, executive vice-president and chief operating officer for CanJet said that the carrier will provide charter flights for the operators for up to 10 sun destinations.  "We have developed a strong working relationship with Sunquest and Transat over the past few years and I am delighted that we are in a position to provide aircraft uplift for their winter package programs."

e-passport readers installed at major US airports

The US Department of Homeland Security has announced that machines capable of reading electronic passports have been installed in several airports including New York (Kennedy), Los Angeles, Washington (Dulles) and Newark. The passport readers need to be functional by October 26 when travellers from countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program will be required to carry passports embedded with digital photographs and data in order to enter the US without a visa (Canada is exempted from the VWP).

As part of the campaign, Barbados Tourism offered travelers an air credit of up to $300 US per person for travel taken or booked during the summer or fall 2006. Known for its deals to Bermuda, the Caribbean, and Mexico, CheapCaribbean.com drew on its loyal, affluent customer base with an integrated marketing campaign, including highly successful weekly email deals, to become the top "Best of Barbados" producer.

Discount start-up carrier Virgin America will unveil the first of its 34 aircraft at San Francisco International Airport this week, though it has yet to receive approval from the US Department of Transport (DoT).The Airbus A320 will be named Jefferson Airplane after one of the city's most famous rock bands and lead singer and rock legend Grace Slick will attend the champagne christening.
