Four aircraft grounded in Russian spy intrigue

| Alexander Litvinenko | | British Airways has grounded three Boeing 767s after finding low traces of a radioactive substance on two of the aircraft. Two of the planes are at London Heathrow having undergone forensic testing. The third is in Moscow awaiting clearance to return to the UK. Home Secretary John Reid told British Parliament today that a fourth aircraft, a Boeing 737 operated by the Russian airline Transaero, flew into Heathrow and is being investigated for possible radiation contamination.I n a statement, BA said it understood, from advice it has been given, that the risk to public health is low. The airline said it is continuing to make every effort to contact 33,000 passengers who travelled on 221 European flights operated by the three aircraft identified by the investigation. An estimated 3,000 staff will apparently also need to be checked. The three aircraft were taken out of service Wednesday, after being identified by the British government as part of the investigation into the death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Hamilton takes over from long time WestJetter Brenda Trockstad, who resigned unexpectedly last week. "John joined WestJet this week and brings with him significant experience in the wholesale travel business in Canada and the United Kingdom", commented Hugh Dunleavy, executive vice president, Commercial Distribution for WestJet. "He has experience in operations, marketing and sales with some of the biggest operators in the country which brings terrific expertise to WestJet Vacations." Hamilton began his career in the wholesale industry in the United Kingdom and came to Canada in 1984 with Trafalgar Tours.

Welcomes two million visitors in 2006
On November 29, Cuba celebrated in two millionth visitor this year. For three years in a row the island has surpassed the two million visitor mark, indicating its strong positioning in its major markets. Canada leads the way as the number one market, followed by the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Germany, France and Mexico among others. A statement by the Cuba Tourist Board says that an increasing number of people choose Cuba as a unique destination, not only because of beaches and climate, "but also because Cuba is a destination that put forward the nature, the health, the safety, its rich history and culture and its social achievements."

Readies for royal rendezvous Residents of Sydney, Australia are on a countdown to a royal rendezvous in their city on February 20. A special website www.queenmary2.com.au gives the daily countdown (82 days left) before Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 have their historic meeting in the city harbour. Along with the daily countdown, the site has information on the ships, their itineraries and a schedule of events planned for a day that will make maritime history. When the 151,400gt Queen Mary 2 sails into in Sydney on its maiden world voyage the morning of February 20, it will be the largest ship ever to enter the harbour. Too large for the Overseas Passenger Terminal, it will tie up at Woolloomooloo to await the arrival of Queen Elizabeth 2 when it arrives that evening.
