TRAVELHotNews had an opportunity to sit down with Jocelyn Sylvester-Gairy, Director of Tourism for Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique. The director is in Toronto to discuss both Grenada's revitalized tourism, after the devastating hurricane of 2004, and the upcoming World Cup of Cricket ,when six super-8 matches will be played in the country's new stadium due for completion within a couple of weeks. While the Director is speaks in a reasoned, thoughtful manner, she is clearly passionate about her country. "You have to measure things against the background of recovery" she said, "Look at the devastating effects of New Orleans and the tsunami in the far east, measured against that, it is amazing what our tiny little island of 100,000 in just 113 square miles has accomplished." First Choice will take it's time

Company will do what is best for First Choice
First Choice managing director, Dermot Blastland said the company will not be rushed into a decision about whether or not to accept an offer from MyTravel for its mainstream tour operating business. According to UK publication Travel Mole, Blastland, who formerly headed First Choice and Signature in Canada, said he was unhappy that the story had been leaked, noting "we will make up our minds when we are ready." Blastland said First Choice was evaluating the situation and will do what is best for the shareholders. "MyTravel has had a tough year because it has been tough for everyone. Perhaps they need to say something about what they are doing about the situation," he said. [Full text]



CITC's 11th STUDENT CONFERENCE A SUCCESS

Students give event high ratings
CITC's 11th Students-in-Travel Conference and Trade Show was a huge success with 80% of student evaluations rating the event as "excellent' or "very good".  381 travel students from all over Ontario registered for the one day event at Toronto's Old Mill Inn & Spa.  Combined with 40 industry speakers, 30 educators and 29 trade show exhibitors, this was one of the largest gatherings dedicated to students.Students attended three of four seminars, led by industry experts:  Ed Bennington of the AIR MILES Reward Program, Diane Cobbold of Knightsbridge Management, Catherine Heeg, a well known industry speaker and Marc Mancini, one of North America's most popular industry trainers.  [Full text]



Czech it out!
Participants describe Edutour as "memorable"

The Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA) in cooperation with CzechTourism Canada, CzechTourism Prague, CSA Czech Airlines and MADI Travel Market hosted an Edutour to the Czech Republic that wrapped up on November 6. The beginner and advanced programme accommodated 22 retail and wholesale professionals along with 3 trade media representatives. The week-long beginner program took the participants through the capital city of Prague and onto South Bohemia with stops in the historical cities of Tábor, České Budĕjovice, Třeboń and Český Krumlov. Regent Seven Seas cancels two cruises
Drydock extended to repair motor damage
Seven Seas Voyageur
After finding damage to the ship's motors during a scheduled drydock, Regent Seven Seas has had to cancel the Seven Seas Voyager's four-night cruise on November 30 and a seven-night cruise on December 4, both departing from Fort Lauderdale. The Seven Seas Voyager will resume its regular schedule from Fort Lauderdale on December 11. Regent said it extended the general maintenance drydock in Freeport, Bahamas, by 11 days after a regular inspection of the ship's diesel electric motors revealed some damage to the electrical connections.Technicians determined that both motors needed to be disassembled and repaired. Spare parts and technical assistance have been flown in from the manufacturer in Europe. [Full text]

Transat Holidays has introduced a Groups Promotion for travel to Greece, Italy and Spain next summer. The promotional offer applies to departures from Toronto for bookings confirmed with deposit by December 29. Bookings to Italy or Spain will receive a savings of $150 per person, plus the 21st passenger travels free. Greece group bookings receive a savings of $200 per person, a bonus of $500 when 15 passengers or more have been confirmed PLUS the 16th passenger travels free. [Full text]

WestJet launches 'Get Set for Mac'
WestJet has launched Get Set for Mac. The application runs directly on a Mac desktop delivering instantaneous information on WestJet flights, vacation packages and deals from WestJet partners directly to computers. Get Set was initially launched in Sep. for PC users and is now available also to all Mac users. Get Set provides quick access to Web check-in, Flight Reminders, Flight Tracker and flight schedules.
