Air tourists to US granted passport reprieve
Requirements temporarily postponed
Canadian travellers flying to the United States will get a brief reprieve on the new US requirements to carry passports and pay an extra $5 user fee when entering the country. The Department of Homeland Security has announced it will not meet the January 8, 2007 deadline set to begin implementation of the air portion of the government's new Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). The American government has not yet set a new deadline, but warned travellers not to delay obtaining passport for travel in the New Year. Though Washington has yet to set a specific date for implementation, the new rules are expected to come into effect in the very near future. The passport requirement for air travellers is the first stage of more stringent US border identification rules for Canadians and Americans entering or reentering the country. Land crossing rules are also expected to be tightened well before the mid-2009 deadline that currently exists. [Full text]

Hotel undergoes US$60M renovation and upgrade
The luxurious Ritz-Carlton in Palm Beach, Florida is getting ready to reopen December 16. AA expands self-service check-in
American Airlines airport self-service machines have been equipped with passport readers that help speed check-in for customers travelling from the US or travelling to/through the United States from an international location. More than 365 of the check-in devices are now equipped with passport readers for use by American and American Eagle customers. Documents will still be verified either by an agent during self-service check in or at the gate prior to boarding.
