| A few days ago, Air Canada announced that
its Tango product would be available exclusively at aircanada.com,
noting that “Should a third party distributor be capable of
merchandising the Tango product and its attributes consistent with
Air Canada’s requirements, the Tango product will then regain
wider distribution.”

ACTA’s Response:
“After discontinuing its cash reward program last December,
Air Canada's announcement today, without any advance notice, regarding
Tango fares is yet another move to undermine the efficiency of travel
agencies. Once again, it is clear Air Canada does not want to recognize
the value of travel agents, although, directly or indirectly, they
distribute 70% to 80% of the airline tickets sold in Canada.
“Moreover, the latest move by Air Canada probably violates
both the spirit and intent of its agreements with major travel agencies
and corporations by eliminating their ability to track efficiently
the total amount of business they give to Air Canada.
“’Air Canada does not understand that, without a sustainable
retail travel agency sector, consumers would have less information,
choice and support with respect to the purchase of their airline
tickets. It is deplorable that Air Canada does not see any value
in the services of this retail network and treats its sales organizations
with such disdain’ said Christiane Théberge, Vice-President
Public Affairs at ACTA.
“Other major carriers, such as WestJet, truly appreciate
and recognize the importance of the retail network, and in return
this network actively supports them in a win-win relationship. ACTA
would like to assure those suppliers that they can count on its
continued support.
“’ACTA hopes that GDS will do their utmost to bring
these fares back into their system and would also like to invite
Air Canada’s President, Montie Brewer, to meet with representatives
of the Association to discuss the relevance, if any, Air Canada
places on its partnership with the retail travel network. Clearly
ongoing talks between agencies and Air Canada managers to date have
proven less than productive,’ concluded Théberge.”
