| Passenger traffic growth continues |
|
| Latin America and the Middle East posted double digit growth in airline passenger traffic for 2005.
According to The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the countries saw growths of 11.4 percent and 13.1 percent respectively.
Internationally, passenger traffic grew by 7.6 percent in 2005.
"The industry is returning to a more normal growth pattern after the shocks that began in 2001. Passenger traffic is lower than the 15.3 percent increase recorded in 2004, but above the historical growth of six percent," said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's director general and CEO.
Despite this growth, the industry lost US$6 billion in 2005. U.S. airlines lost US$10 billion, European carriers made US$1.3 billion and Asian carriers earned US$1.5 billion.

| Snow creates havoc on popular B.C. highways |
|
|
About half a metre of snow forced the
closure of British Columbia's Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt on
Monday, while an avalanche threat closed the Kootenay Pass portion of
Highway 3.
The B.C. Transportation Ministry said highway crews
were working to retrieve about 50 cars that got stranded on the Coquihalla
as the heavy snow forced them off the road before the toll highway was
closed early Monday morning.
Plows and sanders were working to clear the estimated 50 cm of
heavy snow from the highway.
Also, a high-level avalanche threat forced the ministry to close the
Kootenay Pass stretch of Highway 3 in southeastern British Columbia in both
directions late Monday afternoon.
