ACTA names Christiane Thebérge President and CEO

Theberge confirmed after a year on the job

Jean Collette, chair of ACTA, is pleased to announce the appointment of Christiane Théberge to the position of president of the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA), effective December 18. Théberge will report to ACTA's Board of Directors. TRAVELHotNews.com caught up with Théberge this morning and asked about her plans for ACTA.  The incoming president and CEO told us that ACTA is working on some new projects that will be announced early in the new year.  "Meanwhile," she said "we will continue to work for our members, dong what we do - lobbying on major issues, working on areas we believe are so important, like content fragmentation and relationships between travel agents and suppliers."

Starry gets a hug
Signature Vacations, Skyservice Airlines and the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation teamed up for the fifth consecutive year for a "Flight to the North Pole." Over 150 passengers, "children" of the Starlight Starbright Foundation and their families arrived at the Skyservice Avitat in Toronto yesterday afternoon where they were greeted by "Starry' The Starlight Starbright mascot and entertained by Doo-Doo the clown and a magician, before boarding the Skyservice flight to head for the "North Pole.Also on hand were airport Wildlife Control agents Max and Rob, with their special friends, a Harris Hawk named Cookie - as in "smart" cookie - and a Falcon named Flash. Cookie and Flash were taking a break from their regular job of keeping the runways free of birds, to greet the kids, who were fascinated by them perched on their handler's arms. Held at Vox's tony offices at the corner of Yonge and Bloor streets in Toronto, the event drew a large crowd of travel industry types who networked, swapped stories, dished a bit of gossip and craned their necks to check who else was there.Vox's head honcho Susan Webb, dazzling in a bright pink jacket, was everywhere ensuring everything was running smoothly. TUI and Carnival get together

Carnival's German cruise company AIDA, will be brought into the joint company and a separate TUI Cruises brand will be established. The first 3,000-passenger ship will be delivered in 2010. German travel giant TUI and Carnival Corporation are creating a joint venture to enter the high volume premium cruise market. TUI is to acquire up to 25% in a joint venture with Carnival to tap into the German cruise market. The group is currently represented in the luxury segment by Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten and operates the budget Thomson Cruises brand in the UK. "We are now planning to close a gap in the high-volume premium sector with TUI Cruises," said Frenzel.  [Full text]

Alitalia on strike
Alitalia cancelled 225 flights on Friday due to a strike by pilots, ground and cabin staff. Travellers faced cancellations and delays as workers walked off their jobs in a 24-hour nationwide strike.
