Nevada to visitors, "It's 'All About You"
Governor's Conference on Tourism reflects State's attitude

 "All About You" is the theme of the 2006 Governor's Conference on Tourism that opened. December 11 at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino in downtown Reno.  The conference is playing host to several hundred tourism industry delegates and features provocative speakers and special performances by famed country singer Lee Greenwood. "This year's conference will zero in on the individual and the tactics we all need for success; that's why it's 'All About You." Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt said.  "We think the delegates will find the programme relevant to their own businesses."  Hunt chairs the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT), which produces the annual conference, Nevada's premier state wide tourism industry gathering. One hundred cruises in 15 years

Now that's a cruise passenger!
Alzoria Jones stepped into the "Fun Ship" record books on Friday when she boarded Carnival Cruise Lines' Fascination. The voyage marked her 100th Carnival cruise. To put her achievement in perspective, Jones has sailed on 100 cruises since 1991, roughly a cruise every other month for 15 years. Jones took her first Carnival cruise aboard the Fantasy and since then has cruised multiple times each year. She says she doesn't have a favorite port, but the warm weather of the Caribbean keeps her coming back to the region time and again. She also shows no favoritism toward a specific Carnival ship and has sailed on many, including the newest, Carnival Liberty. [Full text]



Canada's Onex a winner in Qantas takeover

Qantas Airways has accepted an increased takeover bid for the airline that values it at A$11.1 billion ($10 billion). The deal comes from Airline Partners Australia (APA) a consortium led by Macquarie Bank and US private equity firm Texas Pacific Group and includes Canada's Onex group headed by Gerald Schwartz. Qantas chairman Margaret Jackson said the new owners had expressed support for core Qantas strategies [Full text]

Grenada hotel demolished to make way for new resort
Multi-million investment will have huge impact on economy
Islander Hotel demolition
History was in the making as the old Islander Hotel at Ballast Ground in Grenada was demolished to start construction on a high end luxury 120 room resort. This resort will be part of the $555 million Port Louis Grenada development spearheaded by British developer Peter de Savary. Minister of Tourism, Brenda Hood says an investment of this type will have a huge impact on jobs and economic activity. Speaking from the site, Hood also said that the project will attract a new type of tourism for the island of Grenada. She commented that it is expected to create a new niche for Grenada to enable the country to focus on high end tourism. [Full text]

At its December 11, meeting at the Ontario Club, CHIMO Club Toronto, an association of professional women in tourism and travel, presented a cheque for $3000.00 to Mark Woods of the Alzheimer Society of Ontario.The funds were raised at CHIMO's annual golf tournament and silent auction held in June and CHIMO thanked all participants and suppliers for making the event such a success. Starwood to manage Nassau resort
Starwood Hotels has taken over management of the Radisson Cable Beach Resort in Nassau and will reopen it as the Sheraton Resort at Cable Beach next year, following an $80m renovation.
