| Jacques Barrot | | Transatlantic open skies talks received a blow as the US rejected a proposal to allow foreign investors more control of airlines in America. US transportation secretary Mary Peters rejected the plan, casting doubt on the future of negotiations with the European Union on a new air travel treaty.The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), initially drawn up by former US transportation secretary Norman Mineta last year, and subsequently amended in May, would not have altered US ownership laws, but would allow non-US investors more input in some aspects of airline operations including marketing, routes and fleet structure.

25% commission on Regal Empress Imperial Majesty Cruise Line is now offering travel agents a 25% commission on the Regal Empress' two-night cruises to Nassau/Paradise Island from Fort Lauderdale. The commission increase, up from 15%, was announced by president Arthur Pollack. 'Travel agents add value to the cruise experience,' he said. 'They've proven to be important business partners for us and play an important role in helping travellers select the cruise that will best meet their needs and expectations.'
