Sunflight consolidates into Signature brand
In winter 03/04 Signature Vacations launched the new Sunflight/SolVac brand in order to support capacity in key resorts with moderately priced hotel product, with last minute pricing in advance.  However since then market conditions have changed, with consumers continuing to book later each season, Signature Vacations has made the decision to consolidate the Sunflight hotel products into the Signature Vacations product line.  "Signature feels the market segment is very price driven and will continue to book these properties."  Said Kathleen Manuel, VP Marketing & Distribution for Signature.

JTB DIRECTOR COMPLETES TENURE
Pennicook Praised for "Outstanding Role"
Dennis Morrison, chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), announced yesterday that Director of Tourism Paul Pennicook has completed his term of office at the Jamaica Tourist Board and will be taking up a new appointment at Air Jamaica as the senior vice president of sales & marketing, effective June 1.  Morrison praised Pennicook's "outstanding role" in the JTB's work over the past three years. Jamaica's tourist industry had its best-ever winter season in 2005-2006.  The search for Pennicook's replacement will begin immediately, Morrison said.

SUNWING LAUNCHES PRICE FREEZE ON 2006/2007 PROGRAM
New combo-style pricing an industry first
Sunwing Vacations has released its 2006/2007 Preview Brochure, which includes a price freeze for travellers who book their vacations early. Travellers who book before August 31, 2006, for trips taken November 1, 2006 through to October 31, 2007, will receive the 2006 pricing.  The 44-page brochure also includes a new, combo-style pricing guide for customers. Under this system, clients choose their holiday package and then select from three colour-coded choices of upgrades and additional services - a first for the industry.

PANAMA'S PRESIDENT UNVEILS CANAL EXPANSION PLAN
Doubled Capacity Will Accommodate World's Largest Cruise Ships
An eight-year, US $5.25-billion plan to double the Panama Canal's capacity was recommended by Panama's President Martín Torrijos yesterday. The nation's voters must approve such a project in a referendum.  A press release said that the construction of a new lane and set of locks would be funded by canal tolls. The proposed lock chambers would be 55 metres wide and 18 metres deep, large enough to accommodate the largest of cruise ships.  The Canal's entrances at the Atlantic and Pacific channels will also be widened and deepened, as well as the navigational channel at Gatun Lake.

Sandals, Beaches ban smoking in indoor public areas
Sandals and Beaches Resorts are going smoke-free. Effective May 1, smoking will be banned in all enclosed public areas, including nightclubs, bars, restaurants, lobbies, conference facilities and retail shops.  Smoking will be permitted outdoors and in designated rooms in each of the resorts.

NORTH CAROLINA DRIVES HOME THE VALUE
Successful Discount Program Returns
North Carolina and its tourism partners are offering savings of more than US $1,000 to Canadians who visit the state this year. The "North Carolina Drives Home the Value for Canadians" program offers free night's accommodations, discounts on golf, 2-for-1 admissions to attractions, shopping discounts, and savings at participating restaurants. There are 53 participants in the bilingual brochure and the program is valid through December 2006.  "The response to the 2004 savings program for Canadians was extremely successful," says Lynn Minges, executive director of the North Carolina Division of Tourism.
