UN World Tourism Organization Reports on Tsunami Recovery
Forward bookings for December and January between 80-90%

Nearly one year later, countries affected by the December 26 tsunami - Indonesia - Maldives, Sri Lanka - Thailand - are optimistic that a strong winter season marked by high occupancy rates will finally put an end to the lingering crisis that has dragged down arrivals and tourism revenues over the past 11 months.

In a recent CTHotNews Survey of the Week, 52 per cent of agents responded in the negative to the question: "Do you have sufficient information to do a good job of selling travel insurance?" We invited feedback from the industry and learned that in November, RBC Insurance® added seven new customer sales representatives to its roster. The new customer sales representatives have been trained by seasoned professionals to ensure agents continue to receive the same high quality service they've come to expect from RBC Insurance, said the company release.

TRANSAT Q4 PROFITS JUMP BUT OUTLOOK CLOUDY
Winter bookings are down 4% while Ontario capacity is up, driving winter package prices lower. Hopes pinned on last-minute bookings
Fourth-quarter earnings at travel company Transat A.T. Inc. jumped 59 per cent to $18 million, but the near-term outlook is cloudy as a result of hurricanes that damaged some sunbelt destinations. CEO Jean-Marc Eustache explained Tuesday that the damage done to the resort area at Cancun, Mexico, by hurricane Wilma has caused travellers to cancel travel plans even though Transat serves other Mexican destinations that were unscathed.

VIRGIN GALACTIC AND NEW MEXICO AGREE TO BUILD SPACEPORT
Hot sales on $200,000 tickets
Virgin Galactic, the British company created by entrepreneur Richard Branson to send tourists into space, and New Mexico announced an agreement Tuesday for the state to build a $225-million-US spaceport. Virgin Galactic also revealed that up to 38,000 people from 126 countries have paid a deposit for a seat on one of its manned commercial flights, including a core group of 100 "founders'' who have paid the initial $200,000 cost of a flight upfront. Virgin Galactic is planning to begin flights in late 2008 or early 2009.
