Air Canada hosts launch to celebrate new flights to Barcelona, Athens, Brussels and Copenhagen Charmaine Pang
Air Canada hosted a launch party to celebrate their expansion into Europe, featuring a series of new non-stop flights to Barcelona, Athens, Brussels and Copenhagen. Claude Morin, vice president of global sales, welcomed travel industry partners, media and Air Canada colleagues to the Horizons level atop the CN Tower in Toronto. Also present were tourist office partners from the Tourist Office of Spain, the Greek National Tourism Organization, Visit Flanders, Visit Belgium, and Visit Denmark.

Set to begin service on March 28, 2010 from London, Heathrow, the new Kingfisher route will fly direct to Delhi, India daily.

ACTA applauds all-in pricing from Galileo Vacations Travelport today announced that Galileo Vacations "has simplified the process of determining the most commissionable packages by enabling agents to sort both by lowest base price and an 'all-in' total price that includes fees, charges and taxes." The company said in a statement that “with this change, Travelport is currently the only GDS to offer price transparency when booking inclusive tour charter (ITC) and land-only products in Canada.” “The enhancement to Galileo Vacations is what we wanted for our 18,000 ACTA agents across Canada,” said David McCaig, president and COO of the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies. “This is great news and will spur our efforts to bring transparency to the whole travel market.”

| WESTJET LAUNCHES YEG-MAUI ROUTE |

WestJet’s inaugural flight from Edmonton to Kahului, Maui departs today
WestJet has announced the launch of new non-stop service between Edmonton and Kahului, Maui. The inaugural flight departs the Edmonton International Airport at 7:30 a.m. MST today. WestJet will fly between Edmonton and Maui once weekly until April 30, 2010. The flights fly once weekly each Friday. Flight WS 1857 departs Edmonton at 7:30 a.m. and arrives in Maui at 11:49 a.m. The Maui flight, WS1856, departs at 1 p.m. and arrives in Edmonton at 10:30 p.m. One-way fares, available in both directions on non-stop flights only, are available from $289, plus applicable taxes and fees. | TOURISTS WILL PAY $10 FEE TO U.S. |

Obama signs program to promote U.S. to tourists, but they'll help pay for it; Canadians exempted from $10 fee Canadian Press
President Barack Obama has signed a bill creating a program to promote the U.S. as a premier tourism destination for international travellers. The U.S. Travel Association calls it a major step in addressing the drop-off in such visits to the U.S. during the past decade. The association says the U.S. welcomed 2.4 million fewer overseas visitors last year than in 2000. Government and private industry would evenly split the program's costs, with Washington contributing up to $100 million a year. That money will come from a $10 fee foreigners must pay if they don't pay for visas to enter the U.S.

EARTHQUAKE HITS TAIWAN A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Taiwan on Thursday, terrifying residents, disrupting communications and triggering at least one large fire, reported the Associated Press. Twelve people were injured, the National Fire Agency said. No tsunami alert was issued. Rail service in southern and central Taiwan was suspended, as was the state-of-the-art subway system in Kaohsiung city, Taiwan's second largest with a population of 1.5 million. Kaohsiung is about 400 kilometres south of Taipei.
