| Go Travel South announces that they have ceased operations; clients are advised to contact their credit card provider for refund
On Wednesday afternoon, Halifax-based online tour operator Go Travel South announced on its website that it was shutting down due to “economic circumstances,” effective immediately. Clients have been advised “not [to] show up to the airport for [their] flights as they will not be departing.” The company’s website also states that they will not be responding to any customer emails, and that clients should contact their credit card provider in order to receive a refund.

Missing: Ann Fairley | | Discover America Canada held its annual general meeting yesterday afternoon at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in downtown Toronto. President Charmaine Singh called the meeting to order and provided a summary of the past year. “Despite a really tough year, I think Canada held its own,” she stated. Yesterday’s meeting also elected a new executive team for Discover America Canada. Ready for their two-year terms in office are Sana Keller (re-elected), Chris Robinson (re-elected), Ann Fairley, and Adam Wilcox. Charmaine Singh, as Acting Past President, will remain on the board.

| André Rojer | | Curaçao Tourist Board announces André Rojer as Marketing Manager, North America The Curaçao Tourist Board has named André Rojer, a Curaçao native, to the post of Marketing Manager, North America. Rojer has worked with the Curaçao Tourist Board for more than five years, having previously served as the Marketing Coordinator in the Northeast Curaçao Tourist Board office and prior to that as the Sales & Marketing representative in the Miami office. Rojer’s new role will include overseeing the operations, public relations, advertising, marketing and trade activities for the Curaçao Tourist Board in North America. Following graduation, Rojer worked at the Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association on island in Curaçao, before moving to the United States for the Curaçao Tourist Board. Rojer is now based out of the Curaçao Tourism Corporation’s office in Newark, New Jersey.

International travel deficit edges up in Q4 as more Canadians spend elsewhere Canadian Press
Canada's international travel deficit edged up $53 million to $3.2 billion in the fourth quarter as Canadians spent more outside the country. Statistics Canada reports Canadian travellers spent $7.1 billion outside the country in the fourth quarter, 0.8 per cent more than in the third quarter and the highest level in over a year. Foreign travellers spent $3.9 billion in Canada, slightly more than in the previous quarter but still one of the lowest quarterly levels in the last decade. Gap Adventures asks contestants to 'Create Your Own Adventure'; sees 2,800 total entries in first week
Gap Adventures’s new contest, Create Your Own Adventure, has enjoyed a big response in its first week. It invites global travellers to submit an itinerary for the tour of their dreams, virtually anywhere in the world, virtually any way they want. Nearly 1,000 people on three continents submitted their dream itineraries in the first week of the competition, while an additional 1,800 contestants signed on for a chance to enjoy the winning entry. The majority of international traffic visiting the Create Your Own Adventure contest site in the first week came from the United States and Canada.

| THOMPSON HOTEL COMES TO TORONTO |

| Thompson Toronto | | Thompson Hotels will open its first international property in Toronto; coming May 2010 Thompson Hotels has announced that its first international property, Thompson Toronto, will open in May 2010. The property will be located at 550 Wellington Street West, featuring 16 floors and 102 guestrooms. Thompson Toronto will also feature 30,000 square feet of dining and event space, including a signature restaurant, operated by New York-based Scarpetta with Chef Scott Conant. In Toronto, the 110,000-square-foot hotel and amenity spaces will be adjacent to a 336-unit condominium project, the first time Thompson Hotels has been linked to a multi-use property.
