SUMANO SAYS MEXICO IS READY FOR 2010

At a press luncheon for the Riviera Nayarit yesterday afternoon in Toronto, Alfonso Sumano, Director, Mexico Tourism Board took the opportunity to offer some feedback on the past year and what the tourist board anticipates for 2010. According to Sumano, despite last year being a challenging one, the tourist board is ready for 2010. “Mexico is much more than a few reports [of issues coming in] from the north of the country,” he said. “We have the infrastructure and are always ready to welcome Canadians.” Assuring TRAVELHotNews.com that the Canada is home to some of the most educated travellers, Sumano pointed out that despite last year’s economic conditions, and the flu outbreak, Mexico received a lot of support from the Canadian market. ACTA BOARD WELCOMES PEARLMAN

Lindsay Pearlman becomes newest member of ACTA National Board of Directors
ACTA has announced that Lindsay Pearlman is the newest member of the ACTA National Board of Directors. According to David McCaig, President and COO of ACTA, last week Pearlman, who serves as executive vice president and general manager of Ensemble Travel Group Canada, received the unanimous support of the board's directors. Pearlman will join board discussions at its next meeting on March 25. “We recently welcomed Mike Thompson of Carlson Wagonlit Travel to our board and now, with Lindsay Pearlman, we feel enriched beyond belief,” said board chair Jacqueline Jamieson. AC MAKES PLANS TO EXPAND
Despite facing slow economic recovery Air Canada has announced plans to expand capacity by 4 to 6%

Air Canada plans to increase its number of available seats this year, especially on international routes, even though it expects to face a slow economic recovery. After cutting capacity by 4.4 per cent last year to survive the recession, Canada's largest airline plans to increase it by four to six per cent this year using its existing fleet. Domestic capacity is forecasted to increase by 1.5 to 2.5 per cent, following a 3.7 per cent cut last year. In the first quarter, capacity is planned to increase by 5.5 to 6.5 per cent. “We remain focused on building our international network while maintaining our commitment to the Canadian domestic market,” CEO Calin Rovinescu said Wednesday during a conference call. WESTIN INCREASES FOOTPRINT BY 14
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. has announced plans to open 14 new Westin Hotels in 2010. This year's openings span China, Greece, Japan, India, Mexico, the United States, and Canada - including newly opened Westin Wall Centre in Richmond, Vancouver. Other 2010 openings include The Westin Mumbai Garden City in India; The Westin Nanjing in Shanghai, China; The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino in Messinia, Greece; The Westin Austin at the Domain in Austin, Texas; and The Westin Sendai in Sendai, Japan. In 2010, Starwood will debut the Westin brand in Peru with The Westin Libertador, Lima and expand the brand's footprint in Latin and South America with its fifth hotel in Mexico and its first in Mexico City, The Westin Santa Fe. In the next three years, Westin will open two additional hotels in Mexico and its first in Panama.
