TORONTO TOURISM BY THE NUMBERS Toronto welcomed 10 million overnight visitors in 2009, according to Tourism Toronto’s initial estimates for the year. Toronto retained its 10th place ranking in occupancy performance among North America’s top 28 cities. In the 12 months of 2009, Toronto hotels’ Average Occupancy* was 62.3 per cent, down from 67.6 per cent in 2008. In addition, Toronto retained its 8th place ranking in Average Daily Room Rate, within that same group of 28 cities. Most visitors come from Canada; other important markets include the U.S., Britain, and Germany.

Expedia announces launch of Travel Agent Affiliate Program; begins Feb. 3, 2010; agents can now earn commission; sign up free before Mar. 31
Yesterday, Expedia announced the launch of its Travel Agent Affiliate Program (TAAP) in Canada. The program was first launched in Italy in 2002 and has expanded to the U.K., France, Germany and now Canada. Now, Canadian travel agents can gain direct access to Expedia’s global inventory and earn a commission on flights, hotels, tailor-made packages, car rentals, insurance and activities. To become a member of the program, travel agents can register online at Expedia.ca. As a TAAP member, agents will have direct access to Expedia’s global inventory and can use the search engine to check the availability of hotel rooms, flights, and more to make bookings in real time. Ecuador Tourist Board expands marketing activities to Canada; Reggie Kieda of AVIAREPS is representative
The Ecuador Tourist Board is expanding its marketing activities to Canada and the United States, choosing AVIAREPS as its representative. In Canada, the contact is Reggie Kieda, who will foster travel relationships, participate in tourism trade fairs and media campaigns to promote Ecuadorian culture and natural diversity. About one million international tourists visit Ecuador yearly, with the majority coming from North America. By 2014, the country aims to reach the mark of 1.5 million visitors globally. That is why the Ecuador Tourist Board is now concentrating on the key markets in the United States and Canada to attract as many travellers as possible to visit the destination.

The Cayman Islands wants Canadians to warm up this winter with a “That’s So Cold!” photo contest. This contest is part of a new “Get Warm” campaign. The trio of western Caribbean islands is challenging North Americans to take their best “cold” photo for a chance to win a luxury trip for four to Grand Cayman. The top ten images will be voted on to establish the winner. Contestants can use a “Get More Votes” tab to email to friends or post on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Korea sees visitation increase by 5 per cent from Canada in 2009; expect numbers to rise in 2010 The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) reports positive results for 2009, with statistics showing an approximate increase in Canadian visitors of 5 per cent when compared to 2008. This year, the arrival figures are poised to grow further as capacity is added on direct flights with Korean Airlines and Air Canada. The KTO hopes to surpass the $10 billion mark in tourism revenue this year, and seeks to attract 8.5 million foreign tourists through the several events to come. What are they?
