| ASIA-PACIFIC TAKES OVER SKIES |
|
IATA numbers show that Asia-Pacific is now world’s largest aviation market with 647 million passengers in 2009 Charmaine Pang
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports that last year, intra-Asia-Pacific travel overtook the number of passengers in North America as the world’s largest aviation market. Is this the sign of a major shift to come? If you look at the current state of global aviation, it seems likely, as the Asia-Pacific region offers huge potential with number of passengers and increasing liberalization of the market. Last year, Asia-Pacific’s travellers numbered 647 million compared to the 638 million who travelled within North America (including domestic markets). By 2013, an additional 217 million travelers are expected to take to the skies within Asia–Pacific, said IATA in a statement.

GIANT SQUID INVADE CALIFORNIA COAST Giant Humboldt squid weighing up to 60 pounds (27 kilograms) have invaded the California waters off Newport Beach and are being caught by sport fishermen by the hundreds. The squid showed up last week and anglers started booking twilight fishing trips over the weekend to catch them. The animals weigh between 20 and 40 pounds (9 and 18 kilograms), but a few fishermen have reeled in 60-pound creatures. The squid have also recently been spotted off San Diego, Oregon and Washington, all on the U.S. West Coast.

CONCORDE TRIAL UNDERWAY IN FRANCE US airline Continental and five individuals went on trial Tuesday for the crash of the Concorde nearly a decade ago that left 113 dead and ended supersonic travel. A French criminal court will examine conflicting explanations of why the Air France jet smashed into a hotel in a ball of fire just after take-off from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport on July 25, 2000. Continental and two of its employees are accused of the manslaughter of 109 people on the New York-bound plane -- most of them German tourists -- and four hotel workers on the ground.
