LOTS OF SECURITY - BUT WHO WILL PAY?
Canada's major airlines are worried that the hiring of hundreds of airport security officers and the installation of dozens of full-body scanners will lead to an increase in government fees charged to consumers, threatening a fragile recovery in passenger traffic. The federal Transport Department and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) have yet to respond to industry questions about how the beefed-up security measures will be financed, reported the Globe and Mail. Ottawa currently collects $5 to $16 a passenger each way in traveller security fees, with charges varying based on the length of the route.
