Enrique De Marchena
Yesterday afternoon at the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) Caribbean Marketplace in San Juan, Puerto Rico, TRAVELHotNews.com participated in a CHTA press conference, in conjunction with MasterCard.
CHTA president, Enrique De Marchena, said that in today's economic climate, it was crucial for all Caribbean nations to come together and take speedy action to combat the effects the recession has wrought on their tourism industry. "As tourism generates the largest amount of revenue for the Caribbean nations, with visitor arrivals decreased, the destinations' coffers have been reduced. As a result of this loss of revenues from tourism-related industries, governments have reduced budgets which have put pressure on the provision of social services...including reduced tourism budgets," said De Marchena. Humanitarian officials said the proximity of the quake's epicenter, only 10 miles (15 kilometres) from the capital Port-au-Prince, and Haiti's crumbling infrastructure meant it was impossible to gauge how many people might be dead or wounded. "There's probably three million people potentially affected," said Paul Conneally, spokesman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. [Full text and pictures]
