FULL-BODY SCANS COME CLOSER
Full-body scanners coming to 9 Canadian airports within two months

Nine Canadian airports will install full-body scanners within two months to strengthen the security net that failed to catch an alleged terrorist with plans to blow up a planeload of people on Christmas Day, according to Tuesday's La Presse. The report says federal Transport Minister John Baird is expected to make the announcement Tuesday afternoon at a news conference, and that it would be in response to requests from officials in the United States who want to boost security on flights from Canada to the U.S. [Full text and pictures]

U.S. HIV/AIDS TRAVEL BAN LIFTED
U.S. lifts travel ban on Jan. 1; people with HIV/AIDS now able to travel to the country
Human rights groups on Monday praised the official lifting of a decades-old ban that prevented people with HIV/AIDS from travelling to the U.S. President Barack Obama announced in October that his administration would end the ban, and the legislation lifting the travel restrictions came into effect on Monday. The ban on HIV-positive foreigners entering the United States had been in place since 1987. The United Nations issued a statement congratulating both the United States and South Korea, which lifted its own restrictions on visitors with HIV/AIDS on January 1.

U.S. EMBASSY REOPENS IN YEMEN
The U.S. Embassy in Yemen reopened its doors Tuesday after a two-day closure, saying successful attacks on al-Qaeda targets by Yemeni forces a day earlier had addressed concerns about a specific militant threat. The Yemeni Interior Ministry, however, issued its own statement saying the security situation in the capital had always been under control, suggesting that the embassy closures had not been necessary to begin with. The embassy said it shut down for two days because of information of an imminent al-Qaeda attack, but government attacks on Monday had neutralized the threat.
